Devdutt Padikkal reflects on his record 167 in the Galle Test, saying he plans to return to bed now.

Devdutt Padikkal celebrated a significant milestone in his cricket career, achieving his first Test century with a remarkable score of 167 against Sri Lanka during the opening Test match in Galle. This achievement, he noted, was the culmination of two years of dedicated preparation and hard work. Resuming his innings at 131, Padikkal faced 230 deliveries, striking 15 boundaries and a six, contributing to India's total of 460 for 9 on a rain-affected second day of play.

Reflecting on his performance, Padikkal expressed his long-held aspirations to excel at the international level. "I've dreamt of this moment. For the last two years, I've been working really hard to try and make sure that when I get that opportunity, I can do something special like this, and I'm really happy to do that," he stated, highlighting the significance of his achievement.

Strategic Approach Against Spin

Padikkal's innings showcased his aggressive approach, particularly against Sri Lankan spinners. He emphasized the importance of having a strategic mindset when facing spin bowling. "We have discussed that at length, especially when you're playing spin; it's important that you have certain plans in your head," he explained. He noted that proactive footwork and a clear intent to attack were crucial in applying pressure on the bowlers. "Over the last year or so, we have really worked on trying to find ways in our own strengths that you can really implement to make sure that you put pressure back," he added, underscoring the role of preparation in his success.

Maintaining Momentum After Milestones

After reaching his century, Padikkal did not ease off, pushing his score to 167. He acknowledged the importance of maintaining focus immediately after achieving a milestone. "It's just the hunger to score more runs. I just enjoy batting out there," he remarked. He emphasized that the initial phase following a century is critical, stating, "The next 20-30 balls are the really important phase that I try and make sure that I'm completely focused." Padikkal's ambition is fueled by observing other successful cricketers, particularly from Karnataka, which inspires him to replicate their achievements.

Looking ahead, Padikkal anticipates that the pitch in Galle will present increasing challenges as the match progresses. Despite the demanding conditions, he plans to keep his celebrations low-key, humorously stating, "I think I'm tired, so I'm just going to go back to bed now." His focus remains on the game as he continues to build on his promising career.
