Brandon King leads West Indies to comfortable first Test victory over Bangladesh

The West Indies have claimed a commanding eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the opening Test of their two-match series. Chasing a target of 170 runs for victory on Saturday, the tourists relied on a composed performance from Brandon King, who finished unbeaten on 81 to guide his side across the finish line.

The result was set up by a dominant display from the West Indies spin attack, which dismantled the Bangladesh batting lineup in their second innings. Resuming the fourth day at 79 for six, the hosts were unable to mount a significant recovery, adding only 63 runs before being bowled out for 142. Captain Roston Chase was the standout performer with the ball, claiming five wickets for 36 runs, while Jomel Warrican provided excellent support with figures of four for 63.

King and top-order set foundation for successful chase

Facing a tricky target of 170 on a challenging surface, the West Indies openers adopted an aggressive approach against the Bangladesh spinners. Brandon King and John Campbell put together a vital 112-run opening partnership that effectively took the game away from the hosts. King reached his sixth Test half-century during the knock, finishing his innings with 10 fours and a six from 115 deliveries.

Although Campbell fell just short of a half-century, dismissed for 49, and Tagenarine Chanderpaul departed for one, the West Indies remained in total control. King and Kavem Hodge, who contributed an unbeaten 31, shared an unbroken 50-run stand to complete the chase comfortably. Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud were the only bowlers to claim wickets for Bangladesh during the second innings.

Series context and looking ahead

The victory provides the West Indies with a 1-0 lead heading into the final match of the series. Bangladesh, who posted 272 in their first innings compared to the West Indies' 245, will look to bounce back in the second Test. The match saw Nayeem Hasan provide a rare highlight for the hosts, as he recorded his maiden Test half-century, scoring 52 before being dismissed by Chase to end the innings. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Sylhet next week for the series finale.
