Amol Muzumdar signals shift toward specialist T20I squad for India Women

Indian women's cricket head coach Amol Muzumdar has revealed that the national side is on a clear path toward establishing a specialist T20I squad. While the team has enjoyed significant success in the longer formats—winning four of their last five Test matches and securing their maiden ODI World Cup title last year—the shortest format remains an area requiring strategic evolution following early exits in the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups.

When asked at a Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai event how soon a dedicated T20I setup might become a reality, Muzumdar provided a concise response: “Not long.” He emphasized that the transition is already underway, bolstered by the high-quality talent emerging from the Centre of Excellence and the various age-group camps. According to the coach, the next generation of cricketers is better prepared for the specific demands of modern T20 cricket, bringing a heightened focus on fitness, nutrition, and fielding proficiency.

Building a Culture of Professionalism and Dominance

Muzumdar noted that today’s young players, including those at the Under-15 level, are inherently more professional in their approach to the game. He highlighted that these athletes understand the critical role of athleticism and are already well-versed in the physical requirements needed to compete at the highest level. This shift in mindset, he believes, will be instrumental in elevating India’s performance in T20I cricket as these players progress into the senior ranks.

Reflecting on his coaching philosophy, Muzumdar stressed the importance of player receptiveness and the ability to read body language. He explained that effective coaching involves knowing exactly when and how to offer advice, while also respecting an athlete's need for personal space. This approach is rooted in his own experiences in domestic cricket, where he learned that the right communication can significantly influence a player’s development.

Reflecting on Success and Future Leadership

The coach also looked back on the team’s triumphant ODI World Cup campaign, attributing the victory largely to the unity and positive energy within the dressing room. He drew parallels between this squad and the successful Mumbai teams of the 1990s, noting that a vibrant team atmosphere often translates directly into dominant performances on the field. Muzumdar expressed his desire to instill a similar sense of ruthlessness and dominance across all formats of the women's game.

As the team transitions under new captain Smriti Mandhana, Muzumdar took a moment to praise outgoing skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for her leadership over the past three years. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Kaur and stated that he is now focused on the future, aiming to cultivate a culture where the Indian team consistently dictates the terms of play against world-class opposition.
