Despite reports of other cricket boards expressing concerns regarding the quality of the match venues at the Asian Games, the BCCI remains optimistic about the host's preparations. Saikia expressed confidence in the organising committee's ability to deliver adequate on-ground facilities, noting that he intends to personally assess the situation upon his arrival in Japan on October 1.
Prioritizing the Asian Games Gold
The decision to send a full-strength T20I squad to the Asian Games has sparked discussion, particularly as the tournament schedule overlaps with preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup. With several first-choice ODI players included in the Asian Games roster—including Jasprit Bumrah and captain Shreyas Iyer—the board has clearly signaled the importance it places on the event.
Saikia defended the selection, emphasizing that the board views an Asian Games gold medal as a prestigious achievement equal to any other major title. He stated that the depth of Indian cricket allows the board to field multiple competitive teams simultaneously, and therefore, the Asian Games assignment is being treated with the highest level of priority.
Additionally, the BCCI announced a special T20I match against Japan scheduled for September 22. The fixture is intended to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. According to Saikia, the exhibition match was an initiative proposed by ICC chairman Jay Shah, who is keen to promote the growth of cricket in emerging markets. The proposal was finalized during an ICC meeting in Edinburgh earlier this year, where officials from both the Indian and Japanese boards discussed the collaborative effort to expand the sport's reach.
