Arshdeep Singh becomes India's highest T20I wicket-taker in a calendar year

Arshdeep Singh has etched his name into the record books, officially becoming India’s most prolific T20I wicket-taker within a single calendar year. The left-arm fast bowler achieved the milestone during the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, where his performance of 2/33 pushed his 2026 tally to 38 wickets.

By reaching this figure, the 27-year-old surpassed the previous Indian benchmark of 37 wickets, which had been held by Bhuvneshwar Kumar since 2022. Arshdeep’s efficiency has been notable, as he required only 26 innings to eclipse the record, whereas Bhuvneshwar had reached his total across 31 innings.

A landmark achievement in elite company

This achievement places Arshdeep among the most successful bowlers from full-member nations in T20I history for a single calendar year. He is now level with Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, who claimed 38 wickets in 2024. Only Ireland’s Josh Little sits ahead of them, having secured 39 wickets in 2022. Arshdeep’s consistency is further highlighted by his previous high-performing years, having taken 36 wickets in 2024 and 33 in 2022.

The broader list of India’s top performers in a calendar year now sees Arshdeep holding the top spot, followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (37 in 2022), with Arshdeep himself and Varun Chakaravarthy tied at 36 wickets for their respective efforts in 2024 and 2025. Axar Patel also features prominently in the recent standings, having claimed 32 wickets throughout 2026.

Impact on the Christchurch contest

Arshdeep’s contribution was immediate during the match against New Zealand, as he dismissed Tim Seifert early to apply pressure on the hosts during the powerplay. Alongside teammates Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Prince Yadav, he helped reduce New Zealand to 41/3 in just 5.2 overs. Despite this strong start, the visitors faced a recovery effort from Glenn Phillips, who scored 70 off 43 balls, and Bevon Jacobs, who added 58 off 46, as the pair combined for a 116-run partnership to lift New Zealand to 180/5.

In response, India faced a difficult chase, slipping to 112/6 before a late-order surge led by Tilak Varma, who remained unbeaten on 51 from 26 deliveries. While the match provided significant drama in the final overs, Arshdeep’s individual milestone served as a defining narrative of the fixture, cementing his status as a vital component of the Indian bowling attack.
