Vani Kapoor Takes Narrow Lead Into Final Round of Hero Women’s Indian Open

Vani Kapoor has surged into contention at the Hero Women’s Indian Open, positioning herself to potentially become only the second Indian golfer to claim the prestigious title. The 32-year-old veteran produced a composed performance on Saturday, carding her second consecutive round of 69 to move to the top of the leaderboard with a three-day total of 211.

This marks the first time in her career that Kapoor has held the lead heading into the final round of a Ladies European Tour event. While she currently sits one stroke clear of a formidable chasing pack, the experienced campaigner remains cautious, acutely aware of the unpredictable nature of the challenging DLF Golf and Country Club layout.

Chasing Pack and Tournament Dynamics

Kapoor’s path to the title is far from guaranteed, with two former champions breathing down her neck. Defending titleholder Shannon Tan of Singapore and three-time winner Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand are tied for second place at 212. The leaderboard remains tight, with Pranavi Urs and Magdalena Simmermacher sitting just one stroke further back at 213, ensuring a high-stakes finish on Sunday.

The third round saw a significant shift in momentum as the overnight leader, Chiara Tamburlini of Switzerland, struggled to navigate the course. After leading for the first two days, Tamburlini carded a seven-over 79, dropping into a tie for 10th place. In contrast, Shannon Tan demonstrated the volatility of the course by mounting a spirited recovery, including a remarkable run of five birdies in the first six holes of her round.

Kapoor’s Path to the Final Day

Kapoor’s third round was defined by a steady start, featuring three birdies on the front nine. Although she added two more birdies on the back nine, a late bogey on the 18th hole slightly tempered her finish. Despite the pressure of leading a home event, she is focused on maintaining her composure rather than looking too far ahead.

The history of the tournament serves as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead. Last year, Hitashee Bakshi held a three-shot lead entering the final day before eventually finishing third. With Aditi Ashok remaining the only Indian player to have secured this title—achieved back in 2016—Kapoor carries the hopes of the home crowd as she prepares for the decisive final round.
