Afghanistan have officially climbed to seventh place in the latest ICC Men's ODI team rankings, marking a significant milestone as they reclaim their all-time high position. The shift in the standings comes following their clinical performance in the tri-series final in Sharjah, where they secured a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe.
With this latest update, Afghanistan now hold a rating of 94 points, edging ahead of England, who have slipped to eighth place with 93 points. This achievement matches the peak ranking Afghanistan first attained in May 2025, further cementing their status as a rising force in the 50-over format ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Dominant Final Performance Secures Ranking Boost
The path to the rankings climb was paved by a comprehensive display in the tri-series final. Afghanistan’s bowlers set the tone early, dismantling the Zimbabwe batting lineup for just 169 runs in 43.3 overs.
Despite a resilient 68 off 83 balls from Sikandar Raza and a contribution of 31 from Ryan Burl, Zimbabwe were unable to post a competitive total. In response, Afghanistan’s top order made light work of the chase.
Tournament Success and Rankings Context
Ibrahim Zadran’s composed half-century earned him Player of the Match honours, while Rashid Khan was recognised as the Player of the Series for his exceptional contribution of 11 wickets throughout the tournament. This victory has not only boosted their standing but also brought them within striking distance of sixth-placed Sri Lanka, who currently hold a narrow one-point lead.
At the top of the ICC table, India remain the team to beat with a rating of 115, maintaining a six-point cushion over second-placed New Zealand. South Africa, Pakistan, and Australia round out the top five, while Bangladesh and the West Indies sit in ninth and tenth respectively. For Afghanistan, the focus now shifts to maintaining this momentum as they continue to close the gap on the world's elite cricketing nations.
