Amit Mishra Returns to Delhi Capitals as Spin Bowling Coach

The Delhi Capitals have confirmed the appointment of veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra as their new spin bowling coach for the upcoming 2027 Indian Premier League season. This move marks a homecoming for the former India international, who previously served as a key player for the franchise during his extensive career in the tournament.

Mishra, who officially retired from professional cricket last September, brings a wealth of experience to the Delhi coaching staff. Having featured in 162 IPL matches across four different franchises—including the Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants—he is widely regarded as one of the most successful bowlers in the league's history.

A Decorated Career Joins the Coaching Ranks

The franchise announced the appointment on social media, welcoming back their highest-ever wicket-taker with the moniker, The OG Tiger. Mishra expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, noting his deep personal connection to the city and his commitment to delivering the success that the Delhi fan base has been anticipating for several years.

Mishra’s credentials in the IPL are significant. He concluded his playing career with 174 wickets at an economy rate of 7.37. His ability to deceive batters with flighted leg-breaks was a hallmark of his game, most notably demonstrated by his record-breaking ability to take hat-tricks. He remains the only bowler in the tournament's history to claim three hat-tricks, achieving the feats in 2008, 2011, and 2013. His debut in 2008 was particularly memorable, as he claimed a five-wicket haul in his very first match.

Aiming for Success in 2027

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Delhi Capitals, who finished in sixth place during the 2026 season and remain in pursuit of their first IPL title. By integrating a player of Mishra's tactical acumen and historical knowledge of the franchise, the team management hopes to bolster their spin department and improve their overall performance in the coming campaign.

Beyond his IPL exploits, Mishra enjoyed a distinguished international career, representing India across all three formats between 2003 and 2017. Over that period, he earned 22 Test caps, 36 ODI appearances, and 10 T20I appearances. His transition into coaching is expected to provide the Delhi Capitals' spin contingent with valuable mentorship as they prepare for the challenges of the 2027 season.
