PV Sindhu Headlines Indian Contingent at Hylo Open in Saarbrucken

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu arrives in Germany this week to spearhead the Indian challenge at the Hylo Open, a USD 500,000 Super 500 badminton tournament. The former world champion enters the competition in Saarbrucken with significant momentum, having recently secured a runner-up finish at the French Open. Her campaign in Paris saw her push world No. 1 An Se-young of South Korea to three games in the final, building on a season that also included a title victory at the Japan Open in July.

Sindhu, who is aiming to maintain her recent form, faces Turkey's Neslihan Arin in her opening round match. Her participation is the highlight of a broad Indian contingent looking to make an impact on the international circuit as the season progresses.

Indian Men and Women Seek Consistency in Germany

The men's singles draw features seventh seed Lakshya Sen, who previously claimed the Hylo Open title in 2019. Sen is set to face Finland's Joakim Oldorff as he attempts to find greater consistency following a challenging run of results this year. Joining him is eighth seed Ayush Shetty, who faces Taiwan's Su Li-yang. Shetty, a runner-up at the Badminton Asia Championships, previously made waves at the World Championships in August by defeating the then-world No. 1 Shi Yuqi of China.

H S Prannoy, the 2023 World Championships bronze medallist, faces a demanding start against the third seed and reigning world champion, Alex Lanier of France. Other notable Indian men in the field include Kiran George, who meets Malaysia's Cheam June Wei, and Tharun Mannepalli, who is scheduled to play the sixth seed, Toma Junior Popov of France.

In the women's singles, Ashmita Chaliha enters the tournament following a successful period that included winning the Korea Masters and a high-profile victory over three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi at the French Open. Chaliha will open her campaign against Bulgaria's Kaloyana Nalbantova. Meanwhile, eighth seed Malvika Bansod takes on Denmark's Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt, and sixth seed Unnati Hooda, a quarter-finalist at the Asian Games in Japan, faces the Czech Republic's Tereza Svabikova.

The field also includes Devika Sihag, who faces a difficult opening match against the top seed, Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, and Aakarshi Kashyap, who is set to play Ukraine's Polina Buhrova. Additionally, Isharani Baruah and Anmol Kharb are slated to compete in the women's singles qualifying rounds.
