In a remarkable display of skill and determination, 21-year-old Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty achieved a stunning upset against defending champion and World No. 1 Shi Yuqi of China during the Round of 64 at the BWF World Championships 2026. The match, held in New Delhi, concluded with scores of 21-14, 13-21, 21-19, marking a significant milestone for Shetty, who had previously lost to Shi Yuqi three times, including a defeat in the final of the Asia Badminton Championships earlier this year.

Shetty, hailing from Karkala in Karnataka, showcased his exceptional talent with powerful smashes and impressive defensive plays, captivating the home crowd. After a strong start that saw him take the first game convincingly, he faced a setback in the second game but rallied back to clinch the match in a thrilling final game, demonstrating his resilience and competitive spirit.

A Rising Star in Badminton

Earlier this year, Ayush Shetty made headlines by becoming the first Indian men's singles player to reach the final of the Badminton Asia Championships in over six decades. Although he fell short against Shi Yuqi in that match, his victory over Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the semifinals was a significant achievement that announced his presence on the international badminton scene.

Shetty's journey began in the small town of Sanoor, where he was introduced to badminton at the age of eight by his father, who served as his first coach. To further his training, the family moved to Bengaluru, where Shetty refined his skills under the tutelage of coaches at the prestigious Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy.

His breakthrough moment came in 2025 when he secured the US Open title, defeating Brian Yang in straight games, marking his first BWF World Tour title. Following this success, he continued to impress by defeating top-10 players such as Li Shi Feng and Chi Yu Jen at the Asia Championships. Shetty's accolades also include a bronze medal at the 2023 World Junior Championships in Spokane, USA, and victories at various international tournaments, solidifying his status as a formidable competitor in the sport.
