Vithya Ramraj Breaks National Record as India Claims Multiple Medals at 2026 Asian Games

India’s athletics contingent delivered a series of impressive performances at the Paloma Mizuho Athletics Stadium on Monday, September 28, 2026, securing a collection of silver and bronze medals. While the elusive gold remained just out of reach, the day was highlighted by a historic national record and several personal bests achieved under challenging, rain-soaked conditions.

The standout moment of the day belonged to Vithya Ramraj, who etched her name into the history books in the women’s 400m hurdles. Clocking a time of 54.75 seconds, the 28-year-old secured the bronze medal while officially becoming the sole national record holder. Her performance eclipsed the long-standing mark previously shared with the legendary P.T. Usha, who was present to witness the achievement. In the same event, Anu Raghavan also produced a career-best effort of 55.88 seconds to finish in fifth place.

Strong Performances in Field and Track Events

The javelin throw event saw India maintain its reputation for excellence with a double podium finish. Stepping in as a replacement for Neeraj Chopra, Yashvir Singh rose to the occasion by throwing a personal best of 85.72m to claim the silver medal. Despite his strong effort, he was edged out by Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who secured gold with a final throw of 88.55m. Rohit Yadav completed the successful outing for India by taking the bronze with a throw of 84.35m.

On the track, Gulveer Singh added another silver to his tally in the 1500m. He led the race for over a lap and a half, appearing poised for victory before being overtaken by Kazuto Iizawa in the final 20 meters, finishing with a personal best time of 3:36.72. Meanwhile, long jumper M. Sreeshankar earned his second consecutive Asian Games silver medal with a jump of 8.07m. His competition was hampered by the persistent rain, which caused him to slip during his fourth attempt and sustain an ankle injury, forcing him to withdraw from his final two jumps.

Mixed Results in Steeplechase and Discus

The day also brought disappointment in other events. Defending champion Avinash Sable finished fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:21.67, falling short of his previous Games record. In the women’s discus throw, Seema Kaliramna recorded a personal best of 59.88m but finished fourth, marking the first time in 32 years that India has missed the podium in this event. Despite these setbacks, Parul Chaudhary contributed to the medal haul by securing a bronze in the 5,000m, rounding out a day of significant individual milestones for the Indian squad.
