Indian para-athlete
The decisive moment for the Indian competitor arrived during her fifth attempt, where she recorded a best effort of 15.66 metres. This performance proved sufficient to edge out her rivals and claim the top spot on the podium. Iran’s Shahla Hadidi secured the silver medal with a throw of 15.45 metres, while Vietnam’s Thi Ngoc Thuy Nguyen rounded out the top three, taking bronze with a distance of 14.65 metres.
A Career Defined by Consistency and Advocacy
Suvarna, who has been training under the guidance of coach Pintu Nagar, has been a dedicated figure in para-athletics since she began her journey in 2017. As a wheelchair user, she has represented India at three editions of the Asian Para Games and currently holds the second-place ranking in Asia within the F54 discus category. Her success in Nagoya adds to a productive 2026 season, which included a gold medal in discus and a silver in shot put at the Canberra Track Meet in January, as well as a bronze medal at the 17th Fazza International Para Athletics Championship in Dubai.
Beyond her sporting achievements, Suvarna is a prominent disability rights advocate and accessibility specialist. Her professional contributions include conducting over 1,000 accessibility audits across India and serving as a brand ambassador for the Election Commission of India to promote accessible elections. Her athletic career is supported by the government’s Annual Calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC), which provided financial assistance of ₹7,70,607 to aid her training and competition expenses. The F54 classification, in which she competes, is designed for seated field athletes who rely on upper-body strength and arm movement to generate power, as their impairments affect trunk and lower-limb function.
