Shailesh Kumar Headlines India's Golden Day at Asian Para Games

Indian para-athletes delivered a commanding performance on Thursday, securing three gold medals across track-and-field events at the Asian Para Games. The day was highlighted by a dominant sweep in the men's high jump T63 competition, where Shailesh Kumar led a trio of Indian athletes to the podium.

Shailesh, who had already secured a bronze medal in the long jump just a day earlier, cleared a Games record height of 1.89m to claim the gold. He was joined on the podium by former Paralympic bronze medallist Varun Bhati, who took silver with a season's best jump of 1.84m, while Rahul rounded out the sweep by securing bronze with a clearance of 1.81m.

Sprinters Secure Gold in 400m Events

The track events proved equally fruitful for the Indian contingent, with Anjanaben Bumbadiya and Dilip Mahadu Gavit claiming top honors in their respective 400m T47 races. Bumbadiya secured the women's title with a time of 59.97 seconds, finishing ahead of compatriot Jayanti Behera, who took silver in 1:00.65. Thailand's Sasirawan Inthachot completed the podium with a time of 1:02.58.

Reflecting on her victory, Bumbadiya expressed her satisfaction with the result, noting that this was only her second international competition. Meanwhile, in the men's 400m T47 final, Gavit added to his success after winning the 100m event on Wednesday. He clocked 48.27 seconds to take the gold. The race saw a shift in the final standings following the disqualification of Bhavikkumar Bharwad, who had initially finished second but was penalized for a second lane infringement. Consequently, the silver medal was awarded to Japan's Ishida Kakeru, while Uzbekistan's Marufjon Murodulloev moved up to take bronze.

Elsewhere on the track, Tejalben Damor continued her impressive form in the women's 400m T12 event for visually impaired athletes. After previously winning bronze in the 200m T12, she added a silver medal to her tally with a time of 57.60 seconds. The competition continues to highlight the depth of the Indian squad across various para-sport classifications, including the T47 category for upper-limb deficiencies and the T63 class for athletes competing with lower-limb prostheses.
