The
Pathirage, 23, has been in exceptional form this season, having triumphed in eight out of nine competitions. His impressive performances include victories at the Doha and Rome Diamond League events, where he achieved a season-best throw of 92.62 meters in June, surpassing the 90-meter mark. His recent gold medal throw of 89.75 meters in Glasgow further solidifies his status as a rising star in the sport.
Chopra's Comeback Journey
In contrast, Chopra, who is 28, is working his way back to peak performance after a lower back injury sidelined him since September of the previous year. Although he was not at full fitness during the Commonwealth Games, he managed to secure a silver medal with a throw of 85.83 meters, marking his season's best. "I can't say my fitness is there like before. But I'm getting there slowly," Chopra remarked following the Glasgow event.
Since then, Chopra has returned to his training base in Biel, Switzerland, where he is focusing on rehabilitation alongside his childhood coach Jaiveer Chaudhary and physiotherapist Ishan Marwah. With three weeks to prepare before the Lausanne meet, he aims to enhance his performance further.
Competitive Landscape in Lausanne
The Lausanne event, while highly anticipated, has lost some of its luster due to the withdrawal of reigning world champion Arshad Nadeem and European champion Julian Weber. Nadeem, who recently won gold at the 2024 Olympics with a record throw of 92.97 meters, has struggled to replicate that form, with his best this season being 78.63 meters. Weber, who also surpassed the 90-meter mark, is another notable absence.
Despite these withdrawals, the competition remains fierce, featuring top athletes like Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago and Anderson Peters of Grenada, both of whom have impressive credentials. Chopra currently sits in seventh place in the Diamond League standings with six points, while Pathirage and Peters have already qualified for the finals with 23 and 22 points, respectively. A strong performance in Lausanne could elevate Chopra's ranking and secure his spot in the upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest.
