Manav Suthar's remarkable beginning in Test cricket has drawn parallels to Ravindra Jadeja, according to former Indian player Cheteshwar Pujara.

Cheteshwar Pujara urges Manav Suthar to focus on his game rather than pursuing the IPL following impressive performance in Galle.

Manav Suthar, the promising left-arm spinner, has made a remarkable entrance into Test cricket, drawing early comparisons to established star Ravindra Jadeja. However, former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has advised Suthar to focus on honing his skills in the longer format rather than pursuing opportunities in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

At just 24 years old, Suthar has already made a significant mark in his brief Test career, having played only two matches. His debut against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh earlier this year saw him claim five wickets, but it was his recent performance in Galle that truly showcased his potential. There, he achieved a match-winning feat by taking ten wickets, including six in Sri Lanka's second innings, leading India to a 165-run victory and a 1-0 lead in the series.

Pujara's Guidance for Suthar

Pujara emphasized the importance of nurturing Suthar's development as a red-ball specialist. He expressed concern that the allure of shorter formats might distract the young spinner from his primary focus. “We have had this discussion in the past that, yes, all the young players might want to play the shorter format, but India should be looking to preserve him for the Test format,” Pujara stated during an interview on the Sony Sports Network. He acknowledged that while Suthar may be tempted by the IPL, it is crucial for him to maintain the strengths that have made him successful in Test cricket.

While Pujara recognizes the potential benefits of participating in the IPL, he cautioned Suthar against altering his bowling style to fit the demands of white-ball cricket. “He doesn't need to change his bowling much. Just when it comes to white-ball cricket, you need to have that flatter trajectory,” he noted, adding that any participation in the IPL should not compromise his natural abilities.

Future Prospects and Upcoming Challenges

Currently, Suthar is under contract with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, although his opportunities have been limited, with only five matches played and two wickets taken. Pujara highlighted Suthar's unique ability to flight the ball, which he believes is essential for success in Test matches. “For someone like Manav Suthar, who is flighting the ball, you don't need to change that,” he remarked, praising the spinner's willingness to attack even with a new ball.

Suthar's impressive performance in Galle not only solidified his place in the team but also came at a crucial juncture for India, as they secured vital points in the World Test Championship. With the second Test against Sri Lanka set to begin in Colombo on August 23, the Indian team aims to complete a series whitewash, further establishing Suthar's role as a key player in their lineup.
