Three-time Asian Para Games gold medallist Neeraj Yadav dies at 42

The Indian sporting community is mourning the loss of Neeraj Yadav, a decorated para-athlete and three-time Asian Para Games gold medallist, who was found dead at his residence in Delhi on Tuesday. The 42-year-old, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh, was a prominent figure in the F55 para-athletics category, having achieved significant success on the continental stage.

The news of his passing was confirmed by Indian para-athletics coach S Satyanarayana. Following the discovery, a post-mortem examination was scheduled at Delhi's GTB Hospital on Wednesday. Paralympic champion Sumit Antil and fellow athlete Vipin Kasana were among those present at the hospital to pay their respects. Expressing his shock, Satyanarayana described the loss as a profound blow to the sporting fraternity, noting that he was in contact with the athlete's family during this difficult time.

A distinguished career in para-athletics

Neeraj Yadav’s journey in sports was marked by resilience and excellence. Diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven, he initially pursued wheelchair tennis between 2005 and 2012 before transitioning to para-athletics. He specialised in seated throwing events, including the javelin and discus throw, within the F55 classification.

His career reached its zenith at the Asian Para Games, where he secured gold in the javelin throw at both the 2018 Jakarta Games and the 2022 Hangzhou Games. His performance in Hangzhou was particularly notable, as he also claimed the gold medal in the discus throw. These achievements cemented his status as one of India's most successful para-athletes in field events.

Doping suspension and recent developments

In recent months, the athlete had faced significant personal and professional challenges. In October 2023, he returned a positive test for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol following an out-of-competition sample collection by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) at the SAI Centre in Bengaluru. He was subsequently charged with an Anti-Doping Rule Violation in November 2023 and placed under a provisional suspension in 2024.

The doping case had wider implications for Indian sports, resulting in the stripping of two gold medals from the country's total tally at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. This adjustment saw India's overall medal count decrease from 111 to 108, with the gold medal tally dropping from 29 to 27, ultimately moving the nation from fifth to sixth in the final standings. Throughout the legal proceedings, Yadav maintained his innocence, alleging potential sample contamination or a testing error, and had requested a DNA test to verify the sample's authenticity. Reports indicated he had been under emotional stress after missing the recent Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya due to the ongoing suspension.
