Reflecting on his achievement, the 26-year-old Dos Santos noted his consistent form throughout the season, stating that he felt both fast and strong heading into the event. The 2022 World champion and two-time Olympic bronze medallist praised the conditions in Zurich, noting that the track and weather were ideal for high-level competition.
Shortly after the men’s 400m hurdles, Masai Russell continued the momentum in the women’s 100m hurdles. The 2024 Olympic gold medallist crossed the finish line in 12.09 seconds, shaving 0.03 seconds off the previous world record held by Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan. Amusan secured second place with a season-best time of 12.23 seconds, followed by European champion Nadine Visser in 12.34 seconds. Russell credited her success in part to the inspiration provided by Dos Santos’s earlier record-breaking run, which helped her maintain focus on the track.
Beyond the track events, the field competition saw a standout performance from Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Pathirage. The reigning Commonwealth Games champion produced a massive throw of 92.07 metres on his final attempt to secure victory. He finished comfortably ahead of Granada’s Anderson Peters, who recorded 86.23 metres, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner claimed third place with a personal-best effort of 85.16 metres. Both Dos Santos and Russell were awarded $80,000 each for their record-breaking efforts.
