The winner of the competition stands to claim a trophy and a minimum prize of $30,000, with the potential for that figure to double if the event is designated as a Diamond+ discipline. Sri Lankan athlete Rumesh Pathirage enters the final as the clear favorite, having dominated the season with 39 points and a series of impressive throws, including a 92.07m effort in Zurich.
Chopra’s season has been defined by his resilience. After a delayed start to his campaign, he managed a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games with a season-best throw of 85.83m, which he subsequently improved to 88.05m at the Lausanne Diamond League. While he faces stiff competition from the likes of Anderson Peters, who sits second in the standings with 35 points, Chopra’s presence in the final marks a significant milestone in his return to top-tier athletics.
Eyes on the World Athletics Ultimate Championships
Beyond the Diamond League, Chopra is also well-positioned to participate in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships, scheduled for September 11-13 in Budapest. The event is designed as a biennial season-ending showcase for Olympic champions, world champions, and Diamond League winners, offering a substantial total prize purse of $10 million, with $150,000 awarded to gold medalists.
Currently, Chopra sits in seventh place in the qualification rankings for the Ultimate Championships. With the final list of eligible athletes expected to be published on September 6, he remains in contention for one of the eight available spots in the men's javelin field. The qualification process takes into account world rankings and performance, with the winner of the Brussels Diamond League Finals receiving an automatic invitation to the Budapest event.
