Canada celebrates a landmark World Cup victory while Ismael Kone prepares for surgery, and Saliba honors him with a heartfelt tribute.

In a historic moment for Canadian soccer, the national team achieved its first-ever victory in the FIFA World Cup, decisively defeating Qatar 6-0. However, the triumph was marred by a serious injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné, who suffered a devastating leg injury during the match. The incident occurred in the second half when Qatar's Assim Madibo executed a reckless challenge, leading to a grim scene on the field.

Koné, 24, collapsed in pain and immediately called for medical assistance, prompting his teammates to rush to his side. Canada’s captain, Stephen Eustáquio, expressed the distress felt by the players, stating, "I saw his leg. I saw that something wasn't right." Following the foul, Madibo received a straight red card, leaving Qatar with only nine players after another teammate, Homam Ahmed, had been sent off earlier in the match. Koné was given extensive medical attention on the pitch before being taken away on a stretcher, surrounded by emotional teammates.

Coach Provides Update on Koné's Condition

Despite the overwhelming joy of the victory, Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch, later confirmed that Koné had been transported to a local hospital and was preparing for surgery, with family members by his side. While the specifics of the injury have not been officially released, images from the incident indicated a severe fracture to his lower left leg. Eustáquio lamented the loss of Koné, stating, "We're going to miss him. He has that X factor that our team really needs." Star striker Jonathan David also criticized the dangerous nature of the challenge, emphasizing that such plays are unnecessary and only serve to injure players.

Saliba's Tribute and a Night to Remember

Shortly after entering the game as Koné's replacement, Nathan Saliba made a significant impact by scoring Canada’s fourth goal in the 64th minute. In a touching tribute, he celebrated by holding up Koné's jersey, honoring his injured teammate. The match also featured a remarkable performance from Jonathan David, who netted a hat-trick, contributing to the historic scoreline. Cyle Larin opened the scoring, followed by David's two first-half goals, Saliba's tribute goal, and an own goal from Mohamed Manai, with David sealing the victory in stoppage time.

Reflecting on the momentous occasion, Marsch stated, "No one will forget this, and no Canadian will forget this day. It's an incredibly seminal moment for everyone to understand that there's talent in this country, that there's mentality, that there's desire, and that there are a lot of things that make this country special."
