During a press conference hosted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Wednesday, the Haryana native reflected on the personal sacrifices made in pursuit of sporting excellence. A Dramatic Turnaround on the Mat
The gold medal bout against Abdulmazhid Kudiev proved to be the defining moment of Sujeet's tournament. The match saw the Indian wrestler facing a significant 2-9 deficit at the conclusion of the first period. With less than two minutes remaining on the clock, Sujeet launched an aggressive offensive, narrowing the gap to 9-8 before executing a final two-point takedown to seal a 10-9 victory.
Addressing the slow start to the final, Sujeet explained that difficulties with his pre-match warm-up hindered his initial control. However, he successfully adjusted his tactics during the second period. He noted that once he established a better grip, his subsequent attacks proved effective, allowing him to systematically erase the points gap and secure the win.
Focusing on the World Championships
Looking ahead to the UWW World Championships, scheduled from October 24 to November 1 in Astana, Sujeet remains grounded. He acknowledged that the upcoming tournament presents a field arguably tougher than both the Asian Games and the Olympics. Rather than implementing a radical change in his training regimen, he intends to focus on refining his technique and addressing the specific errors identified during his recent bouts.
Sujeet’s preparation for the season has been bolstered by international training stints in Russia and Armenia, facilitated by the Sports Authority of India, TOPS, and the Wrestling Federation of India. He credited these experiences, which involved sparring with world-class wrestlers and Olympic medallists, as instrumental in his development. As he heads to Kazakhstan, the focus remains on consistency and learning from past performances to ensure he remains competitive on the global stage.
