Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz Team Up for Mixed Doubles at the US Open

Serena Williams, renowned for her remarkable 23 Grand Slam singles titles, is set to make a notable return to the US Open, this time in the mixed doubles category alongside Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, who has claimed seven Grand Slam singles titles. The announcement was made by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) on Saturday, marking Williams' first appearance at the US Open since 2022. However, it is important to note that she will not be competing in the singles event.

The USTA also revealed that the final wildcard entry for the women's singles main draw has been awarded to Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion. Earlier this week, the organization disclosed several wildcard entries, including one for Williams' sister, Venus, who is 46 years old. The announcement of Kenin's wildcard filled the last remaining spot, which had been eagerly anticipated by fans and players alike.

Mixed Doubles Excitement

Serena Williams, a six-time champion at the US Open, previously won the mixed doubles title in 1998 alongside Max Mirnyi. This year, she and Alcaraz have secured one of the last three wildcard entries for the mixed doubles event, joining other notable pairings such as Czechs Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik, as well as Americans Emma Navarro and Tommy Paul. Williams recently participated in women's doubles with her sister Venus at the Cincinnati tournament, marking their first collaboration since 2022, although they were eliminated in the first round.

The mixed doubles competition is set to commence on Tuesday and will conclude on Wednesday at the National Tennis Center, just ahead of the main US Open event, which kicks off on August 30. In a recent development, British player Jack Draper and Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina have withdrawn from the mixed doubles, prompting their former partners, Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz, to reunite as a team and gain direct entry into the main draw. Additionally, Diana Shnaider, who lost her partner due to Daniil Medvedev's withdrawal, will have the opportunity to find a new teammate before the draw is finalized on Sunday, just before the qualifying rounds begin on Monday.
