During the disciplinary proceedings, Somani attempted to explain the presence of the substance by citing accidental food contamination. He claimed that medication belonging to a family member had inadvertently entered his food supply. This line of defense drew parallels to the arguments presented during the case of Valieva, who also received a four-year ban following her own doping violation.
However, the independent tribunal tasked with reviewing the evidence found the explanation insufficient. According to an official statement released by the ITIA, the defense failed to provide proof regarding the source of the alleged contamination. The panel of judges ultimately dismissed the theory, describing the claims as scientifically implausible, highly speculative, and unconvincing.
Terms of the Suspension
The ruling effectively removes Somani from the professional circuit for the duration of his four-year ban. Under the terms of the suspension, he is prohibited from competing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis events sanctioned by major governing bodies. These restrictions apply to tournaments organized by the ATP, the WTA, the International Tennis Federation, and all Grand Slam events, as well as any activities overseen by national tennis federations.
