Alexander Zverev has officially clinched the year-end men's tennis No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career, following a standout season highlighted by two Grand Slam titles and a shift in the standings.

Alexander Zverev Secures Year-End World No. 1 Ranking

Alexander Zverev has secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking, marking a significant milestone in a career-best season for the 29-year-old. The ATP Tour confirmed the achievement on Monday, noting that Zverev will finish the year at the top of the standings, overtaking current leader Jannik Sinner before the season concludes next month.

The path to the top spot was finalized following Carlos Alcaraz’s defeat to Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters. With Alcaraz, the world No. 3, unable to close the gap, Zverev is now guaranteed to finish the year as the top-ranked player. At 29, he becomes the oldest player to earn the year-end No. 1 honor for the first time in his career.

A Transformative Season for Zverev

The 2024 campaign has been defined by breakthrough performances for Zverev, who captured his first two Grand Slam titles at the French Open and the U.S. Open. His consistency across the major circuit was further bolstered by a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open and a run to the final at Wimbledon. Prior to this season, the German star’s best results at the majors had been limited to three final appearances.

Reflecting on his ascent, Zverev expressed his satisfaction with the achievement. He noted that winning in Paris and New York, combined with the confirmation of his year-end ranking, represents a dream realized. He emphasized the dedication required to reach this level, particularly highlighting his recovery from a severe right ankle injury sustained during the 2022 French Open semifinals against Rafael Nadal.

Shifts in the ATP Rankings

The change at the top of the rankings comes as Jannik Sinner, the current world No. 1, prepares to miss the remainder of the season. Sinner, who last competed in the Wimbledon final against Zverev, announced last week that he would be sidelined due to ongoing inflammation in his right knee. This development, coupled with the results in Shanghai, paved the way for Zverev to ascend to the top position.

Zverev, who finished the 2024 season as the year-end No. 2, is scheduled to continue his campaign at the Shanghai Masters with a match against Alexander Bublik on Tuesday. The confirmation of his year-end status serves as a major highlight for a player who has successfully navigated significant physical setbacks to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
