Zavaray S. Poonawalla to receive TAI Legend of Indian Horse Racing Award

Zavaray S. Poonawalla is set to be honoured with the prestigious Legend of Indian Horse Racing Award by the Turf Authorities of India (TAI). The accolade, which celebrates his decades of service to the equestrian industry, will be presented during the upcoming Racing Excellence Awards ceremony scheduled for October 24.

The ceremony is set to take place during the Indian Turf Invitation Cup Weekend, an event for which Poonawalla serves as the principal sponsor. The decision to bestow this honour was proposed by the Mysore Race Club and received unanimous approval from the TAI chairman, reflecting the widespread recognition of his influence within the racing community.

A legacy of support and advocacy

Poonawalla’s impact on Indian horse racing spans multiple roles, including his work as a prominent owner, breeder, and benefactor. Throughout his career, he has been instrumental in sustaining the sport, particularly during periods of significant financial instability. His commitment to the industry has been marked by both direct financial intervention and active advocacy on behalf of racing stakeholders.

A notable example of his dedication occurred in 2022, when the Royal Western India Turf Club faced severe financial challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic. Poonawalla stepped in to provide contributions toward prize money, ensuring that competitive stakes could be maintained despite the difficult economic climate. Beyond direct funding, he has also been a vocal representative for the industry, engaging with government officials to address the impact of the heavy GST burden on racing operations.

Continued commitment to the sport

In recent times, Poonawalla has continued to seek innovative ways to bolster the sport's financial health. He recently introduced a shared-sponsorship initiative designed to collaborate with various turf clubs. Furthermore, he has provided essential financial support to the Bangalore Turf Club, a move aimed at protecting prize stakes in the face of declining revenues. These efforts underscore his ongoing role as a key pillar in the sustainability and development of Indian horse racing.
