Lovlina reflects on her challenging journey after Paris, expressing her determination to persevere.

Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medallist, has expressed that one of her most significant accomplishments is her decision to continue her boxing career following the Paris Games. The 28-year-old athlete shared her reflections on the challenges she faced over the past year, including injuries and self-doubt, during a meeting with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya after the Indian boxing team celebrated a record achievement of ten medals at the Commonwealth Games.

After experiencing a quarterfinal exit at the 2024 Olympics, Lovlina emphasized the importance of perseverance. "Continuing for such a long time was a big deal for me. There were many ups and downs after the Paris Olympics, and I faced numerous questions about my future in the sport. However, I chose to come back, and that decision is significant for me," she stated in an interview with PTI Videos.

This year marked Lovlina's third appearance at the Commonwealth Games, where she secured her first medal, a silver. Although she aimed for gold, she expressed satisfaction with her performance. "I have won medals in almost all games and competitions, but it would have been better to finish with gold. Nonetheless, I am thrilled for my team, as seven golds is a remarkable achievement for all of us. I am now preparing for the Asian Games and am determined to improve and win gold," she remarked.

Santiago Nieva, India's foreign coach, praised the team's performance, calling it a historic milestone. "This result is a landmark for us, showcasing some outstanding performances that boost our confidence for upcoming competitions," he noted. He highlighted Sakshi's victory in the women's 51kg category as a testament to India's depth in boxing. "We needed a gold medal in this category, especially given the strong competition we faced in the selection trials, which included three world champions. Sakshi's experience shone through against a formidable opponent from England in the final," he added.

As the focus shifts towards the Asian Games and the Olympic qualification cycle, world champion Jaismine Lamboria, who recently recovered from illness, expressed her commitment to her long-term goal of competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "The main target remains the same: LA 2028. Every athlete strives for improvement, and we will continue to enhance our skills," she stated. When asked if being the reigning world champion added pressure, Lamboria revealed that it actually served as motivation during her recovery. "I was not in a position to perform well, having trained for just three weeks, but that title inspired me to push through," she concluded.
