Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has publicly defended the defensive play that resulted in quarterback Kyler Murray sustaining a concussion during Sunday's 39-22 win over the Green Bay Packers. Despite the severity of the incident, which left the signal-caller motionless on the turf at U.S. Bank Stadium, O'Connell stated on Monday that he does not fault the Green Bay defenders for their actions.

The injury occurred during the Vikings' 11th offensive snap of the game. As Murray scrambled on a third-down play, he was met by Packers defensive end Lukas Van Ness and safety Javon Bullard. The contact sequence began when Van Ness dislodged Murray's helmet, followed by a collision where Bullard’s shoulder and forearm made contact with the quarterback's head. O'Connell noted that because Murray had not initiated a headfirst slide or clearly declared his intention to give himself up, the hit remained within the bounds of a competitive, physical play.

Recovery Status and Potential Lineup Changes

Following the collision, Murray displayed a fencing posture, a common indicator of brain trauma, before eventually walking off the field under his own power. He was subsequently placed in the league's concussion protocol. Providing an update on Monday, O'Connell expressed optimism regarding the quarterback's recovery, noting that Murray was feeling relatively well and was even able to participate in team meetings.

While the team is monitoring his progress on a day-to-day basis, O'Connell has not ruled out Murray for the upcoming Week 2 matchup against the Chicago Bears. Should Murray fail to clear the concussion protocol in time for the game, Carson Wentz is slated to start. Wentz stepped in effectively against the Packers on Sunday, throwing three touchdown passes to help secure the win. In the event of a roster shift, J.J. McCarthy would serve as the backup, with second-year quarterback Max Brosmer remaining available on the practice squad.
