While the team and Stroud’s representatives have engaged in discussions throughout the offseason, no deal has been finalized. Caserio previously noted in late July that an extension was a possibility, but as the team prepares for the start of the regular season, the window for a new contract is closing rapidly. The Texans previously secured their long-term position by picking up Stroud’s fifth-year option for 2027 in April, ensuring the quarterback remains under contract for at least two more seasons.
Focusing on the Field Amid Contract Uncertainty
Stroud has maintained a focus on his on-field performance, leaving the business side of his career to his agent, David Mulugheta. During the start of training camp, the quarterback emphasized the importance of prioritizing his play, noting that his success on the field is what created the opportunity for contract discussions in the first place.
Since being selected with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Stroud has recorded 28 regular-season wins and led the Texans to two AFC South divisional titles. Over his career, he has accumulated 10,876 passing yards and 62 passing touchdowns. However, his recent performance has seen statistical fluctuations. After a standout rookie campaign, Stroud recorded 3,727 passing yards and 20 touchdowns in 2024, followed by 3,041 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2025, a season in which he missed three games due to a concussion. His recent playoff appearances have also been challenging, marked by seven turnovers across two games, including four interceptions in a divisional round loss to the New England Patriots.
In addition to the quarterback's contract status, Caserio provided an update on the roster, confirming that right tackle Braden Smith will be placed on injured reserve with a designation to return. Smith, who signed a two-year, $25 million deal this offseason, sustained a foot injury during joint practices with the Carolina Panthers. He had been competing for the starting right tackle position throughout the preseason.
