Steelers receiver Michael Pittman Jr. sidelined for multiple weeks with foot injury

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks after aggravating a lingering foot injury during Wednesday's practice session. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the setback on Thursday, noting that the issue involves the same left foot affected by plantar fasciitis, which previously forced the veteran to miss the Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots.

Following Wednesday's practice, Pittman was observed using a scooter in the locker room to avoid putting weight on his injured foot. The team is currently evaluating his roster status as they prepare for the upcoming schedule without the receiver, who was acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts this past March and subsequently signed to a three-year, $59 million contract extension.

Offensive adjustments and emerging targets

The loss of Pittman creates a significant void in the Steelers' passing attack, particularly as the team prepares to face his former club this Sunday. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had expressed a desire to integrate Pittman into the game plan for the reunion, but the team must now pivot to other options. Pittman has recorded seven receptions for 89 yards on 12 targets during his early tenure in Pittsburgh.

In his absence, the coaching staff is expected to rely more heavily on third-year receiver Roman Wilson and rookie Germie Bernard. Wilson has emerged as a key target for Rodgers, securing touchdown receptions in consecutive games during Weeks 3 and 4. The 2024 third-round pick has accumulated 14 receptions for 188 yards, maintaining an average of 13.4 yards per catch. McCarthy praised Wilson’s development, specifically highlighting his improved route-running and ability to stretch the field.

Bernard, a second-round selection from Alabama, has also earned praise from teammates for his rapid adaptation to the offense. Wide receiver DK Metcalf commended the rookie’s preparation, noting the difficulty of mastering the team's signals and offensive scheme in a short timeframe. Bernard has recorded seven receptions for 60 yards so far this season.

Injury updates across the roster

While the offense manages the loss of Pittman and continues to monitor running back Rico Dowdle, who has missed practice following a toe dislocation, the Steelers' defense may receive a boost. The team has officially opened the 21-day practice window for safety DeShon Elliott to return from injured reserve. Elliott, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2025, had participated in training camp before being placed on the reserve list to ensure his recovery.

Additionally, the team is monitoring the status of starting cornerback Jamel Dean, who is recovering from an ankle injury sustained against the Cleveland Browns. Although Dean did not participate in Wednesday's practice, McCarthy noted that the player reported feeling better than initially anticipated. To bolster their secondary depth, the Steelers have signed Sean Murphy-Bunting from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad and Terell Smith from the Washington Commanders' practice squad.
