Mike McCarthy indicates Steelers and CB Joey Porter are at a standstill in negotiations.

In a developing situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike McCarthy has indicated that the team is currently at an "impasse" regarding cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Porter, who sustained a back injury during the team's mobility workout on the first day of training camp, is entering the final year of his contract and is eligible for an extension. Although he attended some organized team activities (OTAs) and the mandatory minicamp, he did not participate in drills that were open to the media. Recently, he has been seen on the sidelines during training camp practices, often alongside defensive back Jalen Ramsey, who was activated from the PUP list on Monday.

When asked about the timeline for Porter's return to the field ahead of the regular season, McCarthy acknowledged the complexities of the situation. "I learned this in my early years as a head coach: You have to separate the business and football," he stated. He emphasized the unique challenges faced by both Porter and the coaching staff, particularly as they navigate their first year together. "I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter. I know our defensive guys would love the opportunity. So we're at an impasse right here, and you've got to respect that," McCarthy added, highlighting the contractual obligations that both the player and the organization must consider.

Porter, who was selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has established himself as a reliable starter since his rookie season. Over the past three years, he has recorded an interception each season, along with a sack, 14 passes defensed, and 52 tackles in 2025. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham noted that despite being on the PUP list, Porter has remained engaged in team meetings. "They're really good football players," Graham remarked, emphasizing the importance of preparing both Porter and Ramsey for the upcoming season. He expressed confidence that once they are able to practice, they will be ready to contribute effectively.

As the Steelers approach the regular season, the organization has reiterated its policy of not negotiating contracts once the season begins. Despite the looming deadline, sources indicate that there has been little progress in discussions regarding Porter's contract extension. Furthermore, the Steelers have not engaged in any trade discussions concerning the cornerback. During a media session in June, Porter expressed his belief that he has been a "lead" corner in the NFL since joining the Steelers and feels he deserves appropriate compensation for his contributions. "Definitely," he affirmed, underscoring his confidence in his abilities and the respect he believes he has earned in the league.
