Seahawks face safety shortage for season opener against Patriots

The Seattle Seahawks are set to begin their season opener against the New England Patriots with a depleted secondary. The team has officially ruled out two of their primary safeties, Nick Emmanwori and Ty Okada, for Wednesday night's contest.

Okada, who serves as a starter on the back end alongside Julian Love, was previously confirmed as unavailable due to a hamstring injury. Emmanwori, who provides significant depth as the team's third safety, was also confirmed out after being listed as questionable throughout the week. The defensive back has been recovering from an arthroscopic procedure performed in July to address a right ankle injury, an issue he originally played through during Seattle's victory over New England in Super Bowl LX.

Defensive adjustments and roster moves

In response to the personnel shortage, the Seahawks have made several adjustments to their active roster. Rodney Thomas II, a veteran with 26 starts from his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts, was elevated from the practice squad on Tuesday and is a primary candidate to step into the starting lineup in place of Okada.

Further bolstering their depth, the organization signed AJ Finley from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster. To accommodate this move, the team released guard Bryce Cabeldue. Additionally, running back Velus Jones Jr. has been elevated from the practice squad to provide extra coverage for the season opener.

Full inactive list for Week 1

Beyond the absences in the secondary, the Seahawks confirmed a wider list of inactive players for the matchup. Wide receiver Tory Horton will miss the game due to a hamstring injury, while guard Beau Stephens, tight end Nick Kallerup, and defensive end Mike Morris are also sidelined.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe has been designated as the emergency third quarterback. Under current league rules, Milroe will be in uniform but is restricted from entering the game unless both Sam Darnold and Drew Lock are unable to continue play.
