A Long Road to Recovery
The journey back to the field began in January during the Broncos' 33-30 overtime divisional-round victory over the Buffalo Bills. Nix suffered a fractured right ankle during the game-winning drive, an injury that necessitated two separate surgical procedures. The first operation occurred shortly after the playoff win, while a second procedure was performed in April to address bone spurs within the joint.
Throughout the offseason, the team exercised caution with his rehabilitation. While he was sidelined for the majority of the spring program, he returned to full participation during training camp. His preseason action was limited to a single appearance on August 21 against the Green Bay Packers, where he completed 6-of-9 passes for 76 yards and a 21-yard touchdown strike to running back RJ Harvey. He did not feature in the final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, leaving a 24-day gap between his last live snaps and the upcoming clash with Kansas City.
Focusing on the Opener
Nix has embraced the comparison made by his teammate, acknowledging that the extended period of practice and recovery has left him eager to compete. Despite the long wait, the quarterback emphasized that his focus remains on executing his role within the team's offensive structure rather than attempting to do too much on his own.
The upcoming game carries historical significance for the team, as Nix was the first Broncos quarterback to lead the franchise to a victory at Arrowhead Stadium since Peyton Manning in 2015, having secured a 20-13 win there last December. As he prepares for his latest test, the focus remains on maintaining composure and staying in the moment as the team looks to start their campaign on a high note.
