Mike Macdonald labels Seahawks' record-breaking penalty count 'unacceptable' despite win

The Seattle Seahawks managed to secure a 30-23 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Lumen Field on Sunday, but the win was overshadowed by a disciplinary breakdown that left head coach Mike Macdonald visibly frustrated. Despite extending their home winning streak to nine games and moving to a 3-1 record, the Seahawks were hampered by 14 penalties, resulting in a franchise-record 150 penalty yards.

The sheer volume of infractions was compounded by their timing and nature, with seven of the penalties classified as 15-yard personal fouls. These errors proved costly, as four of them directly aided Los Angeles scoring drives. Macdonald did not mince words regarding the performance, describing the lack of discipline as entirely unacceptable and insisting that such play does not reflect the standard he expects from his squad.

Discipline issues overshadow defensive efforts

The defensive unit bore the brunt of the penalty count, accounting for six of the team's infractions, five of which were 15-yard penalties. Several of these occurred at critical moments, effectively extending Chargers drives that should have ended on third down. Safety Nick Emmanwori was flagged for unnecessary roughness just before halftime, allowing Los Angeles to move into range for a field goal. Later, in the second half, a series of penalties—including an unnecessary roughness call on Devon Witherspoon and roughing-the-passer infractions by DeMarcus Lawrence and Derick Hall—kept the Chargers' offense on the field during key scoring sequences.

Linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who recorded a sack, an interception, and a game-high 12 tackles, admitted the team was collectively frustrated by the situation. While he noted that some calls felt subjective in the heat of the moment, he acknowledged that the team must take responsibility for extending drives for the opposition. The game saw a combined 30 penalties between the two teams, with the Chargers committing 16 for 130 yards.

Looking ahead to the 49ers clash

Despite the penalty woes, the Seahawks managed to hold off the Chargers, eventually sealing the result when Derick Hall recovered a strip sack by Uchenna Nwosu with less than a minute remaining. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who contributed 76 yards on five receptions, echoed the sentiment that while the win was a positive outcome, the team must focus on playing a cleaner brand of football moving forward.

Macdonald confirmed that the coaching staff plans to address the discipline issues immediately, promising a rigorous review process over the next 48 hours. The team will need to tighten their execution quickly, as they are set to host the 4-0 San Francisco 49ers at Lumen Field next Sunday. Macdonald emphasized that while the team played hard and showed resilience to secure the victory, the upcoming week will be defined by frank internal conversations to ensure these mistakes are not repeated.
