Colts Cornerback Sauce Gardner Vows Improvement After 'Embarrassing' Effort in London

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner has publicly addressed his performance during the team's recent victory against the Washington Commanders in London, describing his own effort as embarrassing. The two-time first-team All-Pro, who joined the Colts via a high-profile trade last season, expressed deep dissatisfaction with his lack of pursuit on several plays that have since circulated on social media.

Gardner, who was acquired for two first-round picks, was particularly critical of his own conduct during the game. He emphasized that his recent display did not reflect his personal standards or his identity as a professional athlete. Acknowledging the viral nature of the clips, the cornerback stated that he is committed to ensuring such a lapse in intensity does not occur again.

Addressing the Lack of Pursuit

The scrutiny intensified following an 87-yard catch-and-run by Commanders receiver Antonio Williams during the third quarter. Although Gardner was not the primary defender responsible for the coverage, he was observed jogging while other teammates, including defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore, sprinted to pursue the ball carrier. While the play was eventually nullified by an illegal shift penalty, Gardner admitted that watching the footage later was a sobering experience.

Gardner explained that he had noticed the penalty flag on the field and mistakenly assumed the play would be whistled dead, leading to his decision to ease up. However, he refused to use the officiating as an excuse for his lack of hustle. He noted that seeing his teammates on the defensive line running past him while he was loafing was a moment of realization that his behavior was unacceptable.

Refocusing on Professional Habits

Beyond the lack of pursuit, Gardner also faced challenges in coverage throughout the game. He was involved in two significant plays for the Commanders, including a 47-yard touchdown pass to Treylon Burks and a 48-yard completion to Dyami Brown. While the touchdown resulted from a breakdown in coverage, Gardner acknowledged that he was in a strong position on the 48-yard completion but failed to make a play on the ball.

Gardner emphasized that while technical aspects of the game can be coached, effort is an internal trait that he must manage himself. He expressed a desire to return to the practice field immediately to refine his habits and ensure that his intensity remains consistent regardless of the game situation. The cornerback remains focused on moving past this performance and demonstrating the level of play expected of him as he prepares for the team's upcoming schedule.
