Raiders GM John Spytek provides update on Ashton Jeanty’s ankle recovery

Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty faces an uncertain timeline for his return to the field as the team prepares for its season-opening clash against the Miami Dolphins. Despite the ambiguity surrounding his availability, general manager John Spytek offered a positive assessment of the second-year player's progress on Tuesday.

Spytek indicated that Jeanty is currently in a favorable position regarding his rehabilitation from an ankle injury sustained during practice last Sunday. While the team is not putting a definitive date on his return, the front office remains encouraged by the speed of his recovery process.

Optimism surrounding Jeanty's return

The running back was absent from Tuesday's practice session, though he was observed on a side field working alongside wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr., who is currently on injured reserve. Spytek praised Jeanty’s work ethic and mental approach to the setback, suggesting that his determination could lead to a faster-than-anticipated return to action.

“I expect him to be back as quick as he can, maybe quicker than some people would expect,” Spytek stated. “When that is, we’ll see.” The general manager emphasized that Jeanty is attacking his recovery with the same intensity he brings to his on-field performance, noting that it is difficult to keep the player sidelined for long.

Washington Jr. steps into lead role

In the interim, the Raiders are preparing to rely on rookie running back Mike Washington Jr. to anchor the backfield. Washington, who joined the team after a standout collegiate career at Arkansas, impressed the coaching staff throughout the preseason with his efficiency and explosive playmaking ability.

During his three preseason appearances, Washington recorded 23 carries for a total of 168 yards, averaging an impressive 7.3 yards per attempt. His ability to break off significant gains—highlighted by four carries of 10 yards or more—has earned him the confidence of the organization. Spytek confirmed that the team holds high expectations for the rookie, noting that the staff is eager to see him contribute to winning efforts as the regular season gets underway.
