New York Jets ruled out Mason Taylor and Minkah Fitzpatrick for Lions clash

The New York Jets face a significant personnel challenge ahead of their Sunday matchup against the Detroit Lions, with head coach Aaron Glenn confirming that starting tight end Mason Taylor and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick have been ruled out. Taylor, who sustained a thumb injury during last week’s contest against the Green Bay Packers, was unable to participate in practice throughout the week and is currently listed as week-to-week.

Despite recording only two receptions for minus-2 yards this season, Taylor has been a central figure in the team's offensive scheme, leading all five tight ends on the roster in total snaps played. His absence is expected to create an increased opportunity for first-round draft pick Kenyon Sadiq, who has contributed five catches for 38 yards and a rushing touchdown thus far.

Injury concerns mount for Jets' receiving corps

The Jets' offensive depth is being further tested by a series of injuries at the wide receiver position. With three players already placed on injured reserve, the team is now monitoring Adonai Mitchell, who was limited in Friday’s practice due to a finger injury sustained during Thursday’s session. While coach Glenn expressed optimism that the injury is not a break, Mitchell’s status for Sunday remains uncertain.

Should Mitchell be unavailable or limited, the team’s healthy receiving options with NFL experience are restricted to Garrett Wilson and Isaiah Williams. To bolster the unit, the Jets have added undrafted rookie Malik McClain from the practice squad and are expected to promote either Sterling Shepard or Tyler Johnson to the active roster before kickoff.

Defensive challenges against explosive Lions

On the defensive side of the ball, the team will continue to be without safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is set to miss his second consecutive game due to a groin injury. The secondary faces a formidable task this weekend against a Lions offense that Glenn described as one of the most explosive units the team will encounter all season. The coach specifically highlighted the accuracy of Lions quarterback Jared Goff, whom he worked with during his tenure as Detroit’s defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2024.

The Jets, currently holding a 1-1 record, are looking to address a defensive drought, having gone 19 consecutive games without recording an interception. There is some positive news on the injury front, however, as edge rusher Joseph Ossai and rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds both completed full practice sessions on Friday. Both players are now in contention to make their Jets debuts on Sunday.
