The New York Jets will be without nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat and likely rookie edge rusher David Bailey for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, as the team looks to address recent defensive struggles.

Jets Face Defensive Personnel Crisis Ahead of Raiders Clash

The New York Jets are facing significant personnel challenges on the defensive front ahead of their upcoming home game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat has been officially ruled out for Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium due to a knee injury, while rookie edge rusher David Bailey is listed as doubtful after failing to practice throughout the week with a strained groin.

Both players sustained their injuries during the Jets' 28-25 defeat to the Miami Dolphins last Sunday. The absence of Sweat, a key run-stopper acquired in an offseason trade, creates a void in the middle of the defensive line, with rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. expected to step into his role. Meanwhile, the potential loss of Bailey—who leads the team with 5.5 sacks—would likely see Will McDonald IV take on increased responsibilities.

Defensive Pressure and External Motivation

The timing of these injuries is particularly difficult for a Jets defense that has struggled to contain opposing rushing attacks. Since Week 3, the unit has allowed an average of 153 yards per game, placing them 31st in the NFL. The challenge is further complicated by comments from Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty, who recently suggested that some members of the Jets' defense lack a desire to tackle.

While the remarks have circulated through the Jets' facility, head coach Aaron Glenn emphasized that his team’s primary focus remains on their own performance rather than external commentary. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick echoed this sentiment, noting that while such comments can provide extra motivation, the priority remains executing individual assignments on the field. Privately, some players expressed surprise at the criticism, given Jeanty’s own recent performance struggles and the Raiders' current standing as the 31st-ranked rushing offense.

Offensive Status and Team Outlook

Beyond the defensive concerns, the status of running back Breece Hall remains a focal point for the Jets. Hall, who has been sidelined for four consecutive games with a quadriceps injury, is listed as questionable for Sunday. Although he participated in practice on a limited basis all week, coach Glenn indicated that the team is waiting for him to reach specific rehabilitation markers before clearing him for game action.

In Hall's absence, backup Braelon Allen has provided a spark, recording two 100-yard rushing performances. Both the Jets, currently 2-5, and the Raiders, sitting at 3-4, enter the matchup looking to snap losing streaks. The Jets have dropped their last two games, while the Raiders are currently navigating a four-game slide.
