Defensive Struggles Lead to Coaching Shakeup
Evero, 45, had been at the helm of the Panthers' defense since 2023, serving through the transition to head coach Dave Canales in 2024. While his first season saw the unit finish as the fourth-ranked defense overall, it was also marked by the team becoming the first since 1980 to surrender 3,000 rushing yards in a single season. Since 2024, the defense has struggled significantly against the run, allowing opponents to rack up 200 or more rushing yards in 12 separate games—a league-high figure that doubles the output of the next closest teams.
The 2026 season has been defined by extreme volatility. Despite notable successes in containing high-profile running backs like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs during victories over the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions, the unit suffered major lapses against the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cleveland Browns. Through seven games this year, the defense ranked 30th in rushing defense, 23rd in total defense, and ninth in passing defense.
Staff Restructuring and Future Outlook
The coaching changes extend beyond the coordinator position. Passing game coordinator Jonathon Cooley, who had worked alongside Evero since 2023, has also been relieved of his duties. The two coaches previously shared a Super Bowl victory during their time as assistants with the Los Angeles Rams.
To manage the transition, the Panthers have adjusted their remaining staff responsibilities. Outside linebackers coach AC Carter will take on the additional duty of coaching the defensive line alongside Wash, while secondary coach Renaldo Hill will assume oversight of the entire defensive back operation. The team now looks to stabilize its defensive performance under Wash as they navigate the remainder of their schedule.
