New York Giants Re-sign Braxton Berrios to Practice Squad Ahead of Season Opener

The New York Giants have bolstered their depth ahead of the upcoming season by re-signing veteran wide receiver and return specialist Braxton Berrios to the practice squad. The move, confirmed on Monday, comes with the clear intention of having the 30-year-old active for the team's high-profile Week 1 opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Berrios, who is entering his seventh professional season, was among several players participating in Monday's practice session at the team's East Rutherford facility. His return to the organization follows his release during the final roster cutdown period over the weekend, a tactical move that allowed the Giants to manage their personnel while securing the veteran for their immediate special teams needs.

Strategic Roster Moves and Practice Squad Additions

As a vested veteran, Berrios did not have to clear the waiver process, allowing the Giants to bring him back into the fold quickly. The franchise views him as their primary option for punt returns, and the current expectation is that he will be elevated to the active roster in time for the home opener. This transition is widely anticipated to be a temporary measure before he is officially added to the 53-man roster.

The practice squad also saw the return of wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, who was released alongside Berrios during the weekend cuts. Hyatt, a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, has faced a challenging start to his professional career, having spent much of the summer sidelined by injury. Despite his collegiate success at the University of Tennessee—where he earned the Biletnikoff Award and unanimous All-American honors—the receiver has recorded 36 catches for 470 yards in three seasons and is still pursuing his first NFL touchdown.

The Giants' recent roster adjustments also included the signing of wide receiver Dalen Cambre and quarterback Jake Haener to the practice squad. These moves come as the team finalizes its composition following the decision to retain veteran Odell Beckham Jr. on the active roster. For Berrios, the focus now shifts to regaining momentum after a difficult stretch that saw him play in only 10 games over the past two years due to injury. Having previously spent time with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans, he will look to provide stability for the Giants as they prepare for their divisional showdown against Dallas.
