The New Orleans Saints have made a significant change to their coaching staff during their bye week, parting ways with run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti. The decision follows a period of mounting pressure on the team’s offensive production, specifically regarding their inability to establish a consistent ground attack.

The move comes in the immediate aftermath of a disappointing 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris. During that contest, the Saints' rushing offense struggled to gain any traction, managing a total of just 18 yards on 17 carries. This output marked the franchise's least productive rushing performance since a dismal 11-yard showing back in 1999.

Addressing offensive inconsistency

The Saints currently sit at 2-5 and occupy the bottom spot in the NFC South. Beyond their struggles on the ground, the team has faced challenges in the kicking game and has consistently allowed opponents to gain at least 100 net rushing yards in all but one of their games this season.

Head coach Kellen Moore had previously indicated that the bye week would serve as a period for thorough self-evaluation across all positions. Speaking on the team's collaborative approach to offensive planning, Moore noted that Paganetti and offensive line coach Brendan Nugent were heavily involved in pregame preparations. Moore emphasized that he maintains a group-meeting structure for the staff, a philosophy he carried over from his previous roles in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.

A shift in coaching direction

This dismissal represents the first major alteration to the coaching staff under Moore, who was hired prior to the 2025 season. Despite the team finishing with a 6-11 record last year—a campaign that saw them start 1-8 before winning four of their final five games under quarterback Tyler Shough—the organization had largely retained the existing coaching personnel until now.

As the Saints look to reset during the remainder of their bye week, the focus remains on rectifying the inconsistencies that have plagued both sides of the ball. With the team currently struggling to find momentum in the division, the departure of Paganetti signals a clear intent from the coaching staff to address the deficiencies that have hindered their performance throughout the first seven games of the season.
