Packers quarterback Love set to make his debut in the upcoming preseason matchup.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Jordan Love, the Green Bay Packers' quarterback, is set to participate in the team's first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, despite having suffered a thumb injury during last year's preseason opener. Head Coach Matt LaFleur expressed his belief in the importance of getting players mentally prepared for game situations, regardless of the number of plays they might participate in. However, he also noted that he reserves the right to alter his plans as needed.

Last August, Love injured the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb while playing against the New York Jets. Although he attempted to continue practicing, he ultimately opted for surgery, which sidelined him for the remainder of the preseason. He returned in time for the regular season opener but had to wear a protective brace on his thumb. Reflecting on his previous experience, Love remarked, "Obviously what happened last year sucked. It was very tough. I'm glad that the timeline was what it was, and I was able to be good for Week 1." He acknowledged the need to approach this preseason with caution, stating, "It's definitely one of those things you got to take into consideration going into preseason and everything."

LaFleur's decision regarding Love's playing time may also hinge on the status of the offensive line. He has previously stated that he would refrain from playing his starting quarterback if several key linemen are unavailable. Right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele has returned to full practice following knee surgery, but the condition of starting left guard Aaron Banks remains uncertain due to a persistent knee issue. Regardless of these factors, LaFleur indicated that many starters are expected to see action in the preseason. He noted, "My experiences here show that when we've played in the preseason, we've been better earlier in the season." With a challenging season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on the horizon, LaFleur is keen on ensuring his team is well-prepared. He also referenced data suggesting that players who receive adequate preseason snaps are significantly less likely to sustain injuries during the regular season.
