PHILADELPHIA -- At the Eagles' training camp, quarterback Jalen Hurts has been turning heads with his impressive speed, prompting positive remarks from the team's defensive players. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio noted, "I think Jalen's having a good camp. I think he looks faster." He added that the inability to physically engage Hurts during practice leads to some debate among defenders about whether they could have sacked him. Fangio observed that there have been instances where defenders believed they had him, only to realize they did not.

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who arrived at training camp approximately 10 pounds lighter, echoed Fangio's sentiments. Despite his efforts, he finds it challenging to keep pace with Hurts. "I don't know what it is, but when I'm watching and I'm running after him, it's like a movie; it feels like I'm going slow," Carter remarked. "He be moving man, he's been working hard and he's the one, for sure."

Hurts' Evolving Role in the Offense

Throughout his six seasons in the NFL, Hurts has established himself as a formidable force in the running game, accumulating 3,554 rushing yards and 63 touchdowns. However, last season marked a downturn in his rushing statistics, with career lows in attempts (105), yards (421), and touchdowns (8) since he became the starting quarterback in 2021. This offseason, new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has implemented a significant number of designed quarterback runs, indicating that Hurts' mobility will remain a crucial element of the Eagles' offensive strategy, even as the team transitions to a more under-center approach.

Despite the changes, Hurts claims that his training regimen has not undergone any significant alterations this offseason. He stated, "I don't feel any different than I have felt in the past." Now 28 years old, Hurts is adapting to a new offensive scheme under Mannion. While there have been challenges against the Eagles' elite defense, he has garnered favorable feedback thus far. Fangio commented, "I think he's moving good, and I think he's doing a nice job with the new offense." He acknowledged the adjustments Hurts is making, noting that while he has worked with various coordinators, this year's system is distinct, and Hurts is handling it well.
