Trade speculation and contract impasse
The tension surrounding Porter’s status has led to internal discussions regarding a potential departure. Sources confirm that the cornerback has previously requested a trade, and he remains open to continuing his career with another team. While the Steelers have indicated a willingness to listen to trade inquiries, the organization’s asking price—reportedly a premium draft pick, potentially a first-rounder—has yet to generate significant interest or serious negotiations from other clubs.
The financial disagreement appears rooted in the current market for elite cornerbacks. Several peers across the league, including Denzel Ward, Trent McDuffie, Devon Witherspoon, and Christian Gonzalez, have recently secured contracts exceeding $30 million annually. The Steelers, however, have not approached these figures in their discussions with Porter. While the team has successfully finalized extensions for other players this offseason, such as Nick Herbig, Keeanu Benton, and Darnell Washington, the dialogue with Porter did not gain momentum until recently, and he spent the majority of training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Should Porter be officially ruled out for the contest against Atlanta, the Steelers are prepared to adjust their defensive secondary. Asante Samuel Jr. is expected to step into an elevated role, having joined the team last season following his recovery from spinal fusion surgery. Additionally, the team confirmed on Saturday that defensive back Doneiko Slaughter has been elevated from the practice squad to the active game-day roster to provide further depth.
