Jets WR Adonai Mitchell to miss fourth game following finger surgery

New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is set to remain sidelined for his fourth straight game this Sunday as he continues his recovery from a finger injury. Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed on Wednesday that the receiver underwent a surgical procedure on his hand last month, providing clarity on a situation that had previously been shrouded in uncertainty.

The team initially opted against placing Mitchell on injured reserve following the injury, which occurred during practice ahead of Week 2. At the time, the organization held optimism that the receiver would return to the field within a month. However, after monitoring his progress for roughly 10 days, the decision was made to proceed with surgery. While Glenn noted that Mitchell is currently able to move his fingers well, his status remains week-to-week.

Roster adjustments and offensive outlook

With Mitchell unavailable for the upcoming clash against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, the Jets are adjusting their receiving corps. Tim Patrick, who recently returned from a four-week stint on injured reserve, is expected to start alongside Garrett Wilson. Additionally, the team may receive a boost from rookie Omar Cooper Jr., who has been designated to return from injured reserve after missing four games with a high ankle sprain. Cooper, a first-round draft pick, saw limited action in the season opener before his injury, though he did record a 30-yard catch-and-run in his brief appearance.

The absence of Mitchell has been felt in the team's passing production. In the two games he played, Mitchell recorded nine receptions for 122 yards. Since his injury, the remaining Jets receivers outside of Wilson have combined for only seven catches and one touchdown. The team chose to keep Mitchell on the 53-man roster rather than placing him on injured reserve, a move that prevented them from opening an additional roster spot.

Injury updates on Breece Hall

The Jets are also preparing to be without running back Breece Hall for the third consecutive game. Hall, who is dealing with a quadriceps injury, did not participate in Wednesday's practice and remains listed as week-to-week. In his absence, the team will continue to rely on Braelon Allen, who is coming off a career-best performance in last Sunday’s 17-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns, where he rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown.
