Jayden Daniels Returns to Practice as Commanders Weigh Quarterback Options

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has taken a significant step toward his return to the field, participating in a limited capacity during Wednesday’s practice session. The signal-caller, who has been sidelined with a dislocated left elbow, joined his teammates for a 60-minute walk-through after the squad arrived in England earlier in the day.

While his presence on the practice field is a positive development, head coach Dan Quinn has stopped short of confirming Daniels for Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Quinn emphasized that the team will prioritize a cautious approach to ensure the quarterback is fully prepared before clearing him for competitive action.

Managing the Recovery Process

Daniels was spotted wearing a black brace on his left elbow, a piece of equipment he is expected to utilize for the remainder of the season. During the session, he engaged in footwork drills and took snaps from the center, eventually demonstrating his familiar throwing motion. According to Quinn, the team plans to increase his workload as the week progresses, with his eventual return contingent on strength, functionality, and pain tolerance.

The injury marks the third time Daniels has been sidelined during the 2025 season, following previous issues with his knee and hamstring. After consulting with specialists in New York and Los Angeles, the medical consensus was that he could return without immediate surgery, though the procedure remains a long-term possibility. Quinn noted that Daniels’ familiarity with the rehabilitation process—having dealt with a similar elbow injury in Week 9 of last season—has been an asset in his recovery.

Squad Status and Roster Updates

Should Daniels be unable to suit up on Sunday, Marcus Mariota is slated to start at quarterback, having previously led the Commanders to a victory over Seattle. Washington’s roster remains thin, with safety Nick Cross and guard Sam Cosmi already ruled out for the upcoming game; neither player traveled with the team to England.

The injury report also includes linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo, both of whom are expected to practice this week despite lingering groin and hamstring issues, respectively. Additionally, running back Rachaad White missed Wednesday’s session due to a shoulder injury requiring ongoing treatment. In response to the team's backfield needs, the Commanders recently signed veteran running back Austin Ekeler to bolster their depth.
