While Patrick Mahomes returned to the field months ago, Green Bay's Micah Parsons remains sidelined following a complex ACL and meniscus injury. Coach Matt LaFleur suggests a return to practice could be imminent.

Inside the cautious recovery of Packers star Micah Parsons

Green Bay Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons remains on the physically unable to perform list as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL and meniscus. While coach Matt LaFleur recently indicated there is a possibility that Parsons could return to practice next week, the star defender has yet to participate in team drills more than ten months after his injury.

The timeline for Parsons has drawn comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who suffered an ACL injury on the same day in December 2025. Mahomes was cleared for training camp in July, whereas Parsons has faced a more protracted rehabilitation process. Medical experts and teammates note that the two players faced different surgical requirements and positional demands, contributing to the disparity in their return schedules.

A Complex Recovery Process

Parsons’ injury was complicated by a meniscus tear, which required a full repair rather than a simple trim. According to sports medicine specialists, a meniscus repair often necessitates a strict protocol that limits knee flexion for several weeks, leading to increased stiffness and a slower initial recovery compared to a standard ACL procedure. Parsons confirmed that he was unable to walk without assistance for eight weeks following his surgery.

The Packers have historically maintained a cautious approach with ACL recoveries, typically waiting at least nine months before allowing players to return to the practice field. Teammates Tucker Kraft and Christian Watson, who have navigated their own ACL rehabilitations, have supported Parsons throughout the process. Kraft noted that the additional work required for Parsons' meniscus repair necessitated a longer period of restricted weight-bearing and running.

Balancing Caution and Performance

Beyond the physical requirements, there is a significant mental component to returning from a major knee injury. Sources familiar with the situation suggest that Parsons is prioritizing a return to 100% health to avoid the complications seen in other players who returned to action too quickly. This approach is influenced by the experiences of peers, including former teammate Trevon Diggs, whose performance trajectory shifted following his own ACL injury.

LaFleur has emphasized the importance of physical symmetry, noting that the team is ensuring Parsons’ legs are balanced before he resumes full-contact activity. The physical nature of his position also plays a role in the team's conservative timeline. Unlike a quarterback, who operates in a protected environment, a pass rusher faces constant, high-impact physical challenges. As the Packers look toward the remainder of the season, the focus remains on ensuring Parsons can return to his high-performance level without risking a setback.
