The New England Patriots have announced the passing of Jon Morris, a foundational figure in the franchise's history who enjoyed a distinguished 15-year career as a center in both the AFL and NFL. Morris, who was 84, spent the majority of his professional tenure with the Boston and New England Patriots.

The organization confirmed the news on Thursday, though a cause of death was not disclosed. Morris leaves behind a legacy defined by his durability and impact on the field, having served as a key anchor for the Patriots' offensive line during his 11 seasons with the team.

A storied career in New England

A standout collegiate player at Holy Cross, Morris was a highly sought-after prospect in 1964. He was selected in the fourth round of the AFL draft by the Boston Patriots and simultaneously chosen in the second round of the NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. Ultimately, he chose to begin his professional journey in New England, where he quickly established himself as a premier talent at the center position.

Morris earned six consecutive AFL All-Star selections between 1964 and 1969. Following the AFL-NFL merger, he continued his high level of play, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 1970. His professional career spanned 15 seasons in total, including stints with the Detroit Lions from 1974 to 1977 and a final season with the Chicago Bears in 1978.

Honoring a franchise pillar

Reflecting on his contributions, Patriots chairman and CEO Robert Kraft lauded Morris for his role in shaping the team's identity. In an official statement, Kraft noted that Morris was among the great players who helped build the franchise's foundation, embodying the toughness, dedication, and pride that defined the team's early years.

During his time in New England, Morris played alongside several franchise icons, including Hall of Famers Gino Cappelletti, Babe Parilli, and Jim Nance. His significant contributions were formally recognized by the organization in 2009 when he was named to the Patriots' 50th anniversary team. In 2011, he was further honored with an induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the most influential players in the club's history.
