Kelley’s journey into the creative arts began during his playing days, when he found his focus shifting away from team meetings and toward the scripts he was drafting in his notebooks. After being drafted out of UCLA in 2020, Kelley recorded 1,148 yards and two touchdowns for the Chargers before later joining the New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans. However, as his passion for the game waned, his interest in storytelling grew, eventually leading him to write a 4,000-page comedy-drama series based on the experiences of professional athletes.
From the Locker Room to the Director's Chair
The transition into the film industry gained momentum when Kelley’s agent shared his writing with executive producers of the Hulu series, The Land. Impressed by his authentic portrayal of life outside the stadium, the production team hired Kelley as an entry-level staff writer in February 2025. During his time on the show, he helped shape the character of Zeke, a role heavily inspired by his own experiences navigating the pressures of professional sports, marriage, and media scrutiny.

A New Identity Beyond Football
The shift in career paths has been a transformative experience for the former running back. After spending seven months as a free agent following the 2023 season, Kelley admitted to struggling with his identity as the constant attention of the NFL faded. Through his writing and directing, he has discovered a way to channel his energy into a medium where he dictates the outcome, rather than relying on playcalls or blocking schemes.
Kelley remains optimistic about his future in Hollywood, with aspirations to produce a full-length feature film within the next five years. While he keeps the door to a potential NFL return slightly ajar, his primary focus is now on honing his craft as an artist. By sharing his journey, he hopes to demonstrate to other athletes that there is a viable path to success and fulfillment after their playing careers conclude.
