Drew Lock Leads Seahawks to 2-0 Start as Sam Darnold Nears Return

The Seattle Seahawks have surged to a 2-0 start behind the steady hand of backup quarterback Drew Lock, who delivered a commanding performance in a 31-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. While Lock has seamlessly stepped into the starting role, head coach Mike Macdonald provided a positive update on Sam Darnold, noting that the primary signal-caller’s recovery from a glute injury is progressing faster than anticipated.

Macdonald indicated that Darnold could return to the practice field as early as this week. While the team is currently evaluating his readiness on a day-to-day basis, the coach did not rule out the possibility of Darnold returning for next Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders. Despite the potential for a quick return, the organization remains focused on ensuring their starter is fully prepared before reinserting him into the lineup.

Lock and Smith-Njigba Power Seattle Offense

In his first start since 2024, Lock proved highly efficient, completing 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards without committing a turnover. His chemistry with receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the highlight of the afternoon, as the duo connected for three touchdowns. The scoring barrage began early with an 82-yard strike on the second play from scrimmage, followed by two critical third-down conversions in the second half that effectively sealed the result.

Smith-Njigba’s performance placed him in elite company, as he became only the third player in franchise history to record at least 150 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a single game. The receiver now leads the NFL with 11 games of 100-plus receiving yards since the start of last season. Reflecting on the connection, Smith-Njigba praised Lock’s poise and ability to lead the team under pressure.

Dominant Defense and Team Effort

The Seahawks' defense, which ranked as the league's top scoring unit last season, was equally impressive. After the Cardinals leveled the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter, the Seattle defense stifled the opposition, allowing only four first downs for the remainder of the game. The offense complemented this effort with a methodical 16-play, 70-yard drive that consumed over 10 minutes of clock, culminating in a short-yardage touchdown from tight end AJ Barner.

The victory marks Seattle's 12th consecutive win dating back to last season and their 10th straight triumph over Arizona. While running back Jadarian Price exited the game in the third quarter with a chest injury, Macdonald confirmed that X-rays were negative. Emanuel Wilson stepped in to anchor the ground game, finishing with 92 yards on 21 carries. Lock credited the collective effort of the offensive line and the support of his teammates, including Darnold, who assisted him with protection schemes during the week of preparation.
