Detroit Lions Set to Welcome Back Brian Branch and Cade Mays for Packers Clash

The Detroit Lions are preparing for a significant personnel boost ahead of their pivotal NFC North opener against the Green Bay Packers this Sunday. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that both defensive back Brian Branch and center Cade Mays are on track to return to the active lineup, provided they navigate the remainder of the week without any setbacks.

Branch, a 2024 Pro Bowler, has been sidelined for 10 months following a season-ending Achilles injury sustained during the team’s Week 14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys last year. His recovery, which included surgery last December, has been a long process, but the 24-year-old has been eager to rejoin his teammates. Similarly, Mays is set to return to the field after spending the start of the season on injured reserve due to a wrist injury suffered during training camp.

Bolstering the Lions' Roster

The return of Branch is particularly timely for a Detroit defense that has faced significant challenges in the secondary throughout the early portion of the 2026 season. The unit has surrendered a league-high 1,487 passing yards, and the team is looking for the defensive back to provide a stabilizing presence. While Campbell expressed optimism about Branch’s readiness, he noted that the coaching staff intends to remain conservative regarding his snap count, acknowledging that asking him to play a full 70-play workload immediately would be unrealistic.

Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard praised the dynamic nature of the former Alabama standout, describing him as an elite talent who brings versatility to the defensive rotation. Branch, who recorded 75 tackles and nine passes defended in 12 appearances during the 2025 season, has been actively participating in practice to shake off the rust and is confident in his ability to contribute immediately to the team’s collective goals.

Offensive Line Adjustments

On the offensive side of the ball, the Lions are planning to integrate Mays back into the starting center role. Acquired during the offseason to strengthen the offensive line, Mays has been cleared to return after his projected eight-to-10-week recovery timeline. Campbell indicated that the team intends to move forward with Mays as the starter, while veteran offensive lineman Juice Scruggs will transition into a versatile role, providing depth across both the center and guard positions.

With the Lions currently holding a 3-2 record, the return of these two key players comes at a critical juncture in the schedule. As the team shifts its focus to divisional play, Campbell is balancing the need to integrate his returning starters with the solid performances provided by the depth players who stepped up in their absence. The coaching staff continues to evaluate the specific rotation plans for Sunday, particularly at the center position, where continuity with the football is a primary consideration.
