Roster Competition and Preseason Performance
Blue’s path to the 53-man roster was complicated by a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a portion of the training camp schedule. During his preseason appearances, the running back recorded 23 carries for a team-high 94 yards, adding two receptions for 15 yards. While his speed and potential for explosive plays were noted, these contributions were ultimately insufficient to secure his place on the active roster.
The coaching staff had previously acknowledged improvements in Blue’s maturity, particularly following a difficult rookie campaign where he was inactive for 12 games and limited to 129 rushing yards and a single touchdown on 38 carries. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer had praised his development, but the team ultimately prioritized the versatility of Malik Davis. Davis, who emerged as the No. 2 option midway through the previous season, impressed during camp with 68 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown reception, while also demonstrating value across all four major special teams units.
Looking Ahead to the Regular Season
The Cowboys are preparing for their regular-season opener against the New York Giants on September 13. Javonte Williams, who enters the season as the clear starter after a career-best year featuring 1,201 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, was held out of preseason action to ensure he remains fresh for the start of the campaign. Should Jaydon Blue clear the waiver process, he remains eligible to be signed to the team's practice squad.
